TEACH
Empower an adult:
Teach them to read!

If you can read this sign, then you're qualified to share your knowledge with another adult who may not be able to read road signs, newspapers or even medicine labels.

We'll show you how to use the Laubach method, a guided step-by-step system that progresses at the learner's pace.  In just a few hours, you'll have the tools and confidence that you need to get started.  HCL will be there every step of the way, providing free support and all materials.

Tutors are paired with a student in their community.  A time and location are chosen to match the pair's needs.  We tutor all over Harnett County in locations convenient for you - churches, libraries, banks and Job Link Centers.

English as Second Language Tutoring:

Home to a growing Hispanic population, Harnett County has constant demand for ESL tutors and group teachers.  While being bilingual is certainly an asset, it is not necessary that you speak the native language of your students.  In most cases, learners are most grateful that you are teaching them your language since that is their purpose in coming to HCL.  We are able to support the much larger ESL program offered by the community college by meeting in harder to reach areas, tutoring students one-to-one and forming smaller classes of only 2-6 students.

Host Our Student Ambassador

"I was 72 years old before I learned to read," Perrin Partin says to a room suddenly filled with silence, awe and curiosity about his story.

Indeed, his story is one of triumph and determination, and throughout the year, he shares this story with audiences all over North Carolina.  As our Student Ambassador, his testimonial inspires and challenges all of us to reach for our personal best, no matter at what stage in life.

He was featured in Our State Magazine in 2006, and in 2008 he was awarded Student of the Year from a North Carolina Community Based Organization.  In 2004, he came to HCL after retiring from a very successful career as an electrical foreman, determined to finally tackle the illiteracy that plagued him since he dropped out of school to help raise his siblings and run the family farm.

Years later, he is a shining example of faith and endurance, and he now gives back the gift of knowledge by tutoring a literacy student of his own.

Invite him today to inspire members of your civic group, church, class, company or club.

Volunteer:

Passionate about adult education, but don't have time to tutor every week?  Lend us your skills in recruiting, clerical, fundraising or advocacy.  We are in need of volunteers to help us reach out to our target population in a number of ways from faxing bulletins to representing us at festivals.  Every minute you can spare to help us promote literacy is a minute less that a Harnett area adult has to wait to start lessons at HCL.
